Lavandin
Super
I love the
freshness that this oil gives to my soap. I find it one of those oils
that is stimulating and calming at the same time. It seems to stick
well, I don't personally find it has a medicinal smell, especially in
the blend, but some people have said that they find that of lavandin.
Non irritant
and non sensitizing at low dose but potentially more irritating than
lavender, avoid in early pregnancy.
If you're
wondering about the difference between Super and Grosso, it is higher
in esters (linalyl acetate) which is one of the active components in
the oil. |

LAVENDER
- EUROPEAN
Many of the same properties as the High Altitude, but this oil has a stronger, more floral scent. Wonderful blended with Lavandin or a Geranium essential oil in soap.
Quality of an essential oil can be effected by the climate, location and growing conditions of the original plant.
Generally high altitude french lavender is the cadillac of lavenders when looking for skincare properties.
It is also a very calming oil and can be used to induce sleep. One of the more gentle and healing oils, a staple for anyone using quality essential oils in skincare.
You can blend
this oil with almost anything, my present favourite is clary sage.
Uses:
balances and tones all skin types. Is commonly used for acne,
controls the production of sebum, healing, rejuvenating, sunburn,
itch formulas, insect repellent and linen spray. Calming/ nervous
tension, fatigue, headache, depression and concentration. One of the
gentler oils, gentle enough to be used on small children in proper dilutions. |

Lemongrass
-
India
I
had expected either the Lemongrass or the Litsea Cubeba to give me a
nice fresh squeezed lemon scent. Wrong! But after recovering my
*scentses* upon sniffing all of the essential oils I received in one
order, I went back and played with it a little.
Then
I discovered that I could indeed detect a hint of fresh lemony
grass, perfect for blending with geranium.
It
is said to have astringent properties and to help tighten large pours.
Lemongrass
is a top/middle note that blends well with lavender, bergamot,
cedarwood, tea tree, ylang ylang, frankincense, eucalyptus, lavandin
and citrus scents. For a fresh pick me up, try it with rosemary or peppermint.
Safety:
Phototoxic. Not for use on sensitive skin. Avoid during pregnancy or
with history of high blood pressure. |

Listsea
Cubeba
Well, same
story for this one as the Lemongrass. I was looking for FRESH and I
got LEMONDROPS! So when I went back later I had the bottle of
peppermint handy and thought that might spruce it up a bit. And it did!
This blend is
one of my *favourite evers* and I can't wait to do this one in the
lemon soap of my dreams.
Litsea Cubeba
is also used as a scent anchor and does not have the same
photosensitizing cautions as the true citrus oils do, such as lemon. |

Myrtle
Leaf - myrtus
communis
Scent: I
find this oil to be soothing and fresh but not overwhelmingly so,
another favourite of mine. Slight evergreen tone with a citric but
mellow backnote, if that makes any sense :0)
Blends to try:
citrus, evergreen, sandalwood, frankincense lavender and clary sage.
Uses:
I ordered this oil solely for it's skincare value (especially for
mature skin :0) but am looking forward to working with it's scent as well.
Although one
of it's uses is said to be to combat insomnia, I've been using this
oil in my diffuser to perk me up a bit when I'm sagging at the
keyboard, it has a wonderful balance to it, calming yet energizing.
Balancing and
revitalizing, it is often used for oily skin and acne.
A very gentle
choice for children with respiratory conditions and colds, my number
one pick for the diffuser during cold/flu season. |

Lemon Tea Tree
- Leptospermum Petersonii - Australia - steam distilled - leaves and twigs
Scent: This oil makes me want to run out and buy a bunch of chewy lemon candies. It has a sweet yet tangy note to it that would be great in a cheery blend, very fruity in an uplifting way. Reminiscent of Lemongrass or Litsea Cubeba, but with a "fluttering" tone and vivaciousness going on.
Note: top
Blends to
try: any lemon or citrus, eucalyptus, myrtle, geraniums (rose or chinese), juniperberry, douglas fir, clary sage, lavender, lavandin, rosalina.
Uses:
insect repellent, in diffuser for coughs and colds and in the home for a pleasant lemony scent as well as antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Bright but soothing, in a word - homey.
Safety: Can be a skin irritant, use at 2.5% or lower, using caution and patch testing. |

Sweet
Orange - organic
This oil
smells strangely enough, just like sweet oranges!
It is used
very often in cleaning preparations, well known for it's grease
cutting capabilities.
I put it in a
squirt bottle with water, sometimes lemon or lime.
It is a top
note and and like all the true citrus oils, carries a warning not to
apply before going into the sun.
It can be
blended with lavender, mint, vanilla, neroli, lemon, clary sage,
myrhh and spices.
Safety: Phototoxic |

Oregano
-
originum vulgare
- steam distilled - flowering herb - Greece/Turkey
A very potent germ
killer, Oregano is also a harsh oil used seldom in skin care but
often in the sick room.
Dilute with care.
Some people use this oil highly diluted in olive oil (further diluted
into milk or water) to take internally for flu/sickness. I did not
purchase this oil for internal use.
I like to use it
in my spray bottle with some water for cleaniing my house and in the diffuser/vapourizer
when we are sick.
It also great possibilities used in very dilute percentages to give any blend a fresh, herbal note, similar to tea tree but a touch fresher and less medicinal. Try it with lavender, tea tree, lemons and citrus oils. I wouldn't recommend it for use in a facial product.
Has possibilites
for pain relief when used with caution - a warming oil that can burn
the skin.
Safety: Do
not use on sensitive skin. Highly irritating (will burn if not
highly diluted). Avoid in pregnancy and on babies/children.

Rosalina
-
Melaleuca
ericifolia - steam distilled - leaves and twigs - Australia
A beautiful
springtime essential oil with rich floral notes and a fresh, almost
fruity back note.
Also known as
Lavender Tea Tree, I find this oil to be calming and uplifting, it
puts me in mind of a back porch in summer for some reason.
It's major
components are linalool and cineoles, making it a gentle antiseptic
choice for the diffuser to give a room a pleasant, fresh floral
scent, especially nice to "unstuff" a stuffy/sick room.
Lovely in
perfumery and cosmetics, I like this oil alone, but it can also be
blended with rose geranium, lemon myrtle, nerolina and I assume any
of the oils that blend well with Lavender Essential Oil.
Safety: Not
listed as a skin irritant, use with care as with all essential oils. |
