ABOUT KUKUI NUT OIL

One of my favourite oils, it's light feel and absorbability is incredible. As a rule, I use the more stable oils, such as jojoba, fractionated coconut oil or meadowfoam oil in my lotions, but I almost always make an exception and add a bit of kukui because of it's delicate nature.

It is useful for softening and restructuring skin - I'm thinking of the possibilities for scar reduction - it penetrates to the stratum corneum layer of the skin.

Also a good choice when formulating blends for mature, wrinkled, sensitive or acne prone skin.

Nice to blend with Emu Oil for sunburn, lesions or chapped skin.

For eczema or psoriasis, you may want to try it with rosehip seed oil.

Soapmaking Tidbits: A small amount of this oil can give richness to your soap. Use up to 20% for a decadent bar.

KUKUI NUT OIL - aleurites moluccana

Kukui Nut Oil is another of the luxury oils, the ones that make handmade skincare worth the time and effort.

Thin and light, in colour as well as texture, slight odour that is easily covered. 42% linoleic - 29% linolenic acids - crucial essential fatty acids for healthy skin.

Use as a 5- 10% blend.

As with all oils or skin care ingredients, it's best to do a patch test (apply sparingly to a small area first) to determine how your skin will react.

KUKUI KREME - by Janice Ferrante - www.handmadesoap.ca

This recipe is great to put on after a day in the sun to rejuvinate sun drenched skin, or as a perk me up for summer skin fresh out of the shower. Use sparingly to avoid a greasy feel.

I am very pleased with the soft, powdery feel on my skin and the slight glow it gives. I think this is partly due to the texture of the fair trade cocoabutter, it really is a nice butter.

It comes out the consistancy of a salve without the stickiness, if you would like it a bit firmer, add more cocoabutter or even a touch of wax.

.5oz fair trade cocoa butter
.5oz virgin coconut oil
.2 - .5oz
kukui nut oil
3 -5 drops essential oil (I used Roman Chamomile and 1 drop of Lemon)

Melt the cocoa butter in a double boiler at a gentle heat. If you are using the fair trade cocoabutter it shouldn't take long, it is quite soft for a cocoa butter. Heat only long enough to make it stirable.

Remove from heat, stir in the coconut oil and kukui nut oil.

Add essential oil. I used virgin coconut oil because I thought it would be perfect with the cocoa butter and Roman Chamomile that I used for scent. I also couldn't resist a drop of Lemon to brighten it up a bit although it is a phototoxic oil so you may want to watch it in the sun if you use it. Bergamot FCF could be a nice touch and it doesn't have the phototoxic issues.

You can use Natural Organic Coconut oil as well if you don't want a coconut scent.

For an added skincare boost, you can also add a few drops of a blend of the following C02's - rosehip seed, buckseed berry and calendula. They are well known for their skincare benefits, especially aging or sun damaged skin.
